Mystery Girl

The new VICE series featuring Amelia Dimoldenberg is now on ALL4.  

Part of my job is to edit the first episode shot of a new series and formulate a structure and style that will work throughout every episode.  In this case, the "Dog Suicide Bridge" was the first to be shot and landed in my edit suite.  

It's a great opportunity to make suggestions on how the series should start and end.  In this case, I sourced some archive footage to represent elements yet to be shot.  For example, the idea of a situation room scenario with pins and strings to introduce and draw conclusions at the beginning and end of each episode was taken up and used throughout the series.

Working on the pilot also gives the editor an opportunity to start writing the script for the beginning and transitions from scene to scene.  Down the line, both the Director and talent will use it as a basis to formulate their own ideas.  

The first episode shot  is then used as a reference for the other editors to complete the remaining episodes in a structure that works to tell and investigate each story and a style that is consistent.  

Then the order of release is decided depending on which episodes are judged to make a best first impression and which ones would make a good end to a series.  In this case, the first episode shot will be the last one released.
